What is technographic data?

Technographic data describes the technology a company uses: its ecommerce platform, martech, analytics, hosting, CRM and the rest of its stack. Where firmographics tell you a company's shape and demographics tell you about people, technographics tell you how a business actually operates.

Its value in B2B is qualification. A company running the platform you integrate with is a different prospect from one running a competitor's, and both are different from one running nothing at all. The limitation of most technographic data is that it stops at the technical stack.

The commercial stack, meaning payment providers, checkout methods, BNPL and shipping carriers, is where the buying signals usually sit.

Why technographic data disappoints in practice

1Can technographic data detect software that isn't on a website?
Mostly no. Detection reads public web signals, so internal systems like ERP, finance and HR tools often leave no trace. Providers claiming full enterprise stack coverage are usually inferring from job adverts or filings instead.
2Why do two technographic providers disagree about the same company?
Different crawl dates and different detection rules. One may count a dormant script as active, another may miss a technology loaded through a tag manager. Ask both when the site was last read.
3How do you spot a technology loaded through Google Tag Manager?
It needs the container unpacked rather than the page source scanned. Many providers miss anything fired through a tag manager, which is why martech detection is usually weaker than platform detection.
4Does technographic data work for companies without a website?
Not meaningfully. Businesses with no web presence, or a single-page brochure site, produce almost no signal. For those segments, firmographic and trading data will tell you more than technology detection can.
5How much does technographic data cost?
Pricing usually runs per lookup, per record or as a platform subscription. Compare cost per usable record rather than per detection, since false positives and missing firmographics both make cheap data expensive.
6 What's the difference between technographic data and intent data?
Technographics tell you what a company runs. Intent data tells you what it is researching. A detected migration is closer to intent than a static install, because it shows a decision already in progress.
7Can I use technographic data to find integration partners?
Yes, and it is underused for this. Filtering for companies running tools that complement yours surfaces integration targets, co-sell partners and the agencies already serving your ideal customers.
8How do I use a technographic API for lead scoring?
Pull the stack fields per account and weight them inside your own model. Stack signals usually predict fit better than sector codes, and holding the logic yourself means you can adjust weights as you learn.
9Can technographic data tell me a company's contract renewal date?
No. Contract terms are private. What detection can show is the behaviour around a renewal, such as a competing tool appearing alongside the incumbent or a migration starting.
10How far back does technology adoption history go?
It varies enormously by provider. Some hold years of adoption history, others only a current snapshot. If switching signals
11Is technographic data reliable for enterprise accounts?
Less so than for mid-market. Large organisations run many systems across regions and subsidiaries, so a single domain rarely represents the whole estate. Detection works best where one company runs one stack.
12What sample size do I need before trusting a technographic segment?
Check a few dozen companies you already know. If detection matches your own knowledge on those, the segment is probably sound. If it misses obvious installs, the crawl depth is inadequate.
13Can technographic data be delivered into a data warehouse?
